English
English is a mandatory subject for all students in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.
The Auburn Girls High School English faculty is committed to a teaching and learning program in Years 7-12 which is responsive to the needs of students in a partially selective school. Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.
An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development. We are passionate about the empowering potential of literature, both past and contemporary. Through effective organisation, clear communication and quality teaching the English Faculty is intent on:
- Teaching/learning programs which are responsive to the needs of our diverse student community and also meet the requirements of the syllabus;
- Raising student expectations; and
- Fostering more opportunities for students to demonstrate excellence.
The study of English aims to develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
At Auburn Girls High School an engaging program fosters students’ abilities to understand and create texts. Students explore a wide range of topics, from nature poetry to the way power is represented in story and how to write a memoir.
In doing so, students learn about the power, purpose, value and art of English. The development of these interconnected skills and understandings supports students to become confident communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers, and informed and active participants in society.
The following courses are offered in Years 11 and 12:
- English Advanced
- English Standard
- English Studies
- English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
- English Extension 1
- English Extension 2 (may be offered)
In addition to the core curriculum, the English faculty offers many extracurricular activities. These include, debating and public speaking and partnerships with external providers to extend students' engagement in English.
